The art of
making painted carpets
is
an old one, coming from Europe to Colonial
America. Originally used as druggets,
canvas crumb-catchers used underneath dining tables, they evolved
into decorative, durable and easily washable substitutes for more
expensive imported woven carpets. They fell into
disuse with the development of linoleum and then vinyl sheet
and tile
floorcovering in the 20th century.
There has been a recent revival among contemporary craftspeople and
creative artists. Floorcloths are flexible like
soft leather, made from environmentally safe
materials, and are extremely long-wearing and easy to
clean. Without lint to catch dust and bacteria,
they provide colorful and unusual indoor carpeting solutions that
can be custom designed in a wide variety of styles &
concepts. lIKE THE WEDDING CARPET,
ABOVE, and at
RIGHT , a decorative floorcloth can become a
family heirloom; its durability makes it a worthwhile investment
than will last several lifetimes. |

Built-in or free-standing
custom-designed furniture and storage units
can be proportioned, shaped, colored or
patterned to fit any space or to match existing furniture.
For example, the conference table above is a unique original design
by Carol Crawford, but matches the maple veneer hue of the
Steelcase chairs surrounding it. Carol Crawford
collaborates with cabinet makers, upholsterers, masons, other
artists and many other trades and craftspeople to execute her
original designs. She will shepherd your special furniture
piece throughthe entire fabrication process, inspecting it each
step of the way, from sketch to shop drawing, mock-up and
maquette to finished product. All the pieces on this page
were designed by Carol Crawford; she both designed and made
the floorcloth and screen herself. Every piece she designs
and builds herself is a signed and dated

The art of
making decorative screens and
doors exists in many
cultures, from the lacquered and inlaid screens of ancient Chinese
tradition and the painted paper screens and shoji panels of Japan ,
to folding screens of cloth, decoupage and
rattan. Carol Crawford's screens are different: they
are bas-relief landscapes that include
original photographs, birch frames stained with delicate
washes of waterbased acrylic paints, allowing the wood grain to
show. They are one-of-a-kind. They re-present a
landscape that is as particular as a photograph can make
them, but which still remain as abstract interpretations
because of their simple iconic form and
color. |
Carol Crawford's door
designs shown above, range from
bas-relief collages of wood-on-wood, as in the children's room
door to the left, to photographic inserts as in the door
in the picture at the right, or the use of acrylic paint
stains which follow the natural grain patterns of the wood
used. wooden window shutters can be pictorial, as are those in
the children's room in the photograph shown
below, or can be abstract. Whatever material or pattern choice is
made, it will be in tasteful harmony with the style, color and
proportion of the room and its furnishings. Contact us with your questions and
measurements; an on-site consultation with you will enable Carol to
create an appropriate and unique original design for your interior
setting. |
